An award-winning commission

Congratulations to composer Brett Dean for winning the prestigious 2016 Paul Lowin Song Cycle Prize for his String Quartet No 2 And once I played Ophelia for soprano and string quartet.

You may remember that the ASQ and soprano Allison Bell gave the Australian premiere of this dramatic work in 2015. The Lowin Prize jury said of Dean’s work: “This intensely dramatic work was a standout for the judges… A compelling and exciting work, it pins the listener to the wall from the outset with its extraordinary high tessitura, virtuosic vocal line and demanding string writing.”

Co-commissioned by the Australian String Quartet, Britten Sinfonia and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, this work was made possible by the generosity of a group of ASQ patrons: Nicholas Callinan AO and Libby Callinan, John and Christine Chamberlain, Margaret Flatman, John Funder QC AC, Hartley Higgins, Peter Jopling AM, Michael and Lu Linton, Victor and Barbara Mulder, Allan Myers AC and Maria Myers AC, Terry and Pauline O’Brien, Susan Rennie, Susan Renouf, Paul and Margarita Schneider, Rosita Trinca and Lyn Williams.
