Highly Strung – in cinemas now

Published On: Thu 19 May

Join director Scott Hicks (Shine, Glass: A Portrait of Philip in 12 Parts) on a journey delving into the rarified world of fine instruments and the musicians, dealers, museums and philanthropists who seek them out.

‘Highly Strung’ explores the complex, stirring connections between elusive tones evoked by horsehair on strings, high-rolling investors tempted to spend millions on unique instruments, and a quartet of virtuosi caught up in a duel of tension and harmony.

Focussing on members of the Australian String Quartet and the unique world of rare Guadagnini instruments, Highly Strung takes us from Adelaide to London, Paris, Venice and New York to meet the fascinating characters that bring these instruments to life.

‘Highly Strung’ is screening nationally at Palace Nova till 1 June.

“Hicks engages with spontaneity and humour… dismantling much of the stiff decorum associated with classical music.” Variety
