Join the Australian String Quartet’s Dale Barltrop, Francesca Hiew and Chris Cartlidge, along with special guest pianist Andrea Lam, for an enchanting evening as they journey through an exquisite selection of chamber works at St George’s Cathedral.
The program begins with Tartini’s iconic Violin Sonata in G minor, famously known as the “Devil’s Trill,” arranged by Fritz Kreisler. Putting its performers’ abilities to the test with some technically impressive passages, this sonata evokes both passion and intrigue, showcasing the violin’s incredible range and emotional depth.
The lyrical beauty of York Bowen’s Phantasy in F major, Op.54 for viola and piano follows, reflecting the composer’s innovative spirit and distinct style. Then, Zoltán Kodály’s Serenade for two violins and viola, Op.12 is a delightful interplay of textures and harmonies that highlights the voices of each instrument. The evening concludes with Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No.3 in C minor, Op.45, a masterpiece filled with yearning melodies and rich Romantic gestures.
This program of music performed by Dale, Francesca, Chris and Andrea promises to be a gripping ride through many musical landscapes; hold on tight, and enjoy!
Due to circumstances outside of our control, the originally scheduled program of quartets by Haydn, Mustonen and Grieg will be replaced by selected works for violin, viola and piano.
